Birmingham Artistic Director
Karan Vance
Karan Vance has a background in dance and musical theatre of 25 and 15 years, respectively. She knew she wanted to dance the moment she watched Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker on television at the age of 2. Vance’s mother placed her in ballet classes at Corky Bell at age 3 and from that moment she knew she belonged on a stage. Vance is trained in many genres of dance such as ballet, jazz, tap, Broadway, pointe, modern, and contemporary. Stevan Grebel and Mira Popovich advanced Vance’s ballet technique, while Dale Serrano sharpened her tap skills. Steps on Broadway, Broadway Dance Center, Birmingham Ballet, Nathifa Dance Company and Alabama Ballet gave Vance the tools she needed to branch out beyond ballet and tap. Some of Vance’s notable dance performances are Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and Copelia. Vance fell in love with theatre when she heard the Rent Original Broadway album while attending the Alabama School of Fine Arts. At age 13, she began musical theatre training and began opera training at age 15. Vance studied voice under Dr. Melanie Williams and Steve Pennington. Dane Peterson taught Vance the Stanislavski style of acting. Birmingham Southern College Theater Director Michael Flowers and professor Alan Litsey taught Vance about set building, lighting, sound, and set design. Vance has had the honor of performing in Once on this Island, The Music Man, Into the Woods, Oliver (stage manager), Cabaret (sound and lighting) and Fools (lighting).
